Shatta Wale: Ghana's King of Dancehall

With his gravelly voice, hardcore dancehall rhythms, and rebellious persona, Shatta Wale rose to become one of Ghana's most popular musical exports. Born Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., he took the name Shatta Wale as tribute to Jamaican star Vybz Kartel.

Since bursting onto the scene in the early 2000s, Shatta Wale has unleashed a steady stream of hits that get fans moving. Songs like "Trust Nobody","Enter The net", "Dancehall King", "Freedom", "Gringo" and "Hosanna" showcase his modern dancehall style fusing reggae, ragga and Afrobeats. He often sings in Twi, Ga, Pidgin and Patios over production blending electronic music with traditional African drums.

Shatta Wale has collaborated with global stars like Beyonce. But his real strength lies in his ability to champion Ghanaian culture and speak to local people. He's been hailed as a voice of the nation's disadvantaged youth.

Alongside his prolific musical output, Shatta Wale has expanded his reach by starring in movies and even launching his own branded merchandise. His achievements extend to over 100 local and international awards, including the prestigious VGMA Artiste of the Year.

In 2017, the King of Dancehall was bestowed with the Key to the City by the mayor of a large city in Massachusetts. This honor recognized the African artist's cultural impact and popularity within the city's thriving Ghanaian community.

The following year, in March 2018, the same trailblazing musician was an honoree at a prestigious American music awards event held annually in a major Midwest metropolis. At this high-profile black tie ceremony, attended by many luminaries within the music industry, he was awarded for his instrumental contributions to promoting his nation's interpretation of reggae on the global stage.

This powerful recognition from important figures in American municipal government and the music establishment provided evidence of how the Ghanaian superstar has broken boundaries to share his nation's music with the world. Both moments marked major acknowledgments of his influence as an international African artist.
