Born Winston Rodney in 1945 in St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica, Burning Spear got his start in music via Jamaica's Studio One. But it was linking with Studio One's Clement “Coxsone” Dodd that led to his 1969 debut album Burning Spear which spawned classics like "Door Peep."
Throughout the 1970s, Burning Spear released landmark album after album on seminal reggae labels like Island Records. Standouts like 1975's Marcus Garvey and 1977's Dry & Heavy spotlighted his rich storytelling and distinctive vocal resonance.
His song "Sellassie I" spread far and wide, earning Burning Spear global renown. He toured worldwide and in 1994 was even invited to Zimbabwe to perform for President Robert Mugabe.
To this day, Burning Spear continues releasing albums, most recently 2009's Jah Is Real. Over his five decade career he has released 25+ albums bringing his message of freedom and justice to the people. His unique sound and socially conscious lyrics made him a true reggae pioneer.
