Greetings and Salutations, dear readers, today is a very special day - it's the birthday of the one and only Blakk Rasta! To celebrate this reggae icon, I'm counting down 10 of his hottest tracks. Let's dive in!
Kicking off the list at #10 we've got "Barack Obama"- Blakk Rasta's high-spirited ode to the former U.S. president and his African heritage. I just love the chaka chaka guitar strums on this one. Blakk didn't mince words tackling a very delicate issue at the time. Big ups Ras
Coming in at #9 is "Ganja Sweet"- an earthy roots reggae tribute to cannabis illuminated by Blakk Rasta's unique vocal tone calling for the legalisation of herb. This mellow jam never fails to take me to a happy place.
"Take a Message to Mama" scores the #8 spot with its addictive riffs and empathic lyrics addressing struggles the African youth goes through while hustling abroad. In the song he doesn't seem to worry so much about his struggles like what Mama will feel if she gets to know.
Moving into the top half, "Feed the Youths" takes #7 with its uplifting call to empower young people through education and opportunity. Blakk Rasta brings the fire!
In "Eager to see Mandela", Kuchoko Legend heaps praises on the South African president for fighting so hard and putting his life on the line for his nation. "Blessed Love Mandela"
At #6, it's the consciousness anthem "Holy Spirit". Blakk Rasta's timeless message of spiritual devotion resonates deeply here. He reiterates God is not dead as some may think and asks for God's blessings and healing. When this comes on, I just gotta sing along.
"Barack, The Blessing" glides into the #5 position. Blakk Rasta's joyful afro-dancehall rhythms make this ode to an inspiring leader soar. Congratulating the American president at the time for making it that far, referring to him as an architect of change.
Coming in at #4 is "DoubleTribute to Joseph Hill", a passionate roots reggae tribute to Culture. You can't help but feel enveloped in emotions when he chants "Joseph Hill." Calling on the late Keeper Of Zion Gate - Joseph Hill to wake up and live. Giving a few quotes of Culture's and giving thanks.
The positive vibration of "Bobby" secures the bronze at #3. This favorite spotlights Blakk Rasta's compassionate worldview and smooth flow. In this track, Blakk Rasta calls on a dying hole in heart child to 'come back home' . A very emotional tune with yet a baard guitar solo to compliment it all.
And Blakk Rasta's #2 most legendary track simply has to be "War Up North". I mean c'mon, this reggae birthday anthem calling for peace is just pure fire!
Preaching peace among the people of Northern Ghana, Blakk admonishes citizens to put aside tribal and political differences and live in peace.
At #1 we have Dolay. A dance tune depicting the typical happy lifestyle of the African people. Jump unto the dance floor as we celebrate the legend. Of course happiness is a must!
