Mary, a former house help of popular Ghanaian musician Kuami Eugene, has spoken out about the difficulties she faced working for the afrobeats singer.
In a tell-all interview, Mary disclosed that when she first started working for Kuami Eugene, she was paid only GHS400 monthly. Over the years her salary only increased by GHS100.
"When I started working for him, he was paying me GHS400. After one year, he added GHS100 so my salary became GHS500," she revealed.
Mary explained she was suddenly dismissed from her job after returning home late one night while running an errand for a female friend of Kuami Eugene's.
Kuami Eugene Responds to Former Housekeeper's Claims
When she got back after midnight, Kuami Eugene questioned the lateness and expressed concerns about being blamed if something bad happened. Soon after, Mary was terminated.
In speaking out about the long hours and low income, Mary sheds light on the exploitation house helps can face.
While Kuami Eugene boasts hit songs about money, it seems the well-paid musician could have afforded higher pay and more respect for his employee taking care of his home.
Mary's candor presents one side, but her account highlights issues around treatment of domestic staff in African societies. Her meager earnings from such work should spur us to advocate for ethical standards.
